Recognizing the importance of providing students with an education that transcends boundaries, the University of Florida College of Law is jointly sponsoring the only American summer law program with the Faculté de Droit de L'Université de Montpellier. The program is approved by the American Bar Association. Students studying in Montpellier will benefit from a dual focus on comparative and international law. U.S. and French legal systems will be examined on a comparative basis by American and French professors and practicing attorneys. In addition, the program will focus on the law of the European Community. The program will totally immerse students in the study abroad experience. Mornings and early afternoons will be devoted to law classes, conducted in English. Afternoons will include visits to governmental and judicial offices and meetings with prominent members of the legal profession and the business community. Director: Professor Fletcher N. In the United States, Tulane has been precursor and pioneer in the field of comparative law: it teaches a complete civil law curriculum, conducts regular faculty exchanges with the great law faculties of France, and brings French students each year to its graduate program in New Orleans. Our program in Paris not only follows that tradition, but has created a new one-to train American students and lawyers for practice in the new European Community. Our Institute's courses in European Legal Studies are designed to ready the student for transnational practice in the United States or on site in Europe. Students who earn at least six hours of credit will receive the Institute's "Certificate in European Legal Studies." This year, the six courses have again been selected to provide either a comparative introduction to substantive German private law or to provide an introduction to international transactions and international litigation. Approximately ten German students from the Free University will also be attending the classes on a non-credit basis. These students contribute substantially to both the academic and the social experiences derived from the program Contact: Tel: 504 865-5980 SANTA CLARA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW: |
TULANE UNIVERSITY In light of the legal and cultural traditions of Greece, summer study in that country is particularly appropriate for law students seeking specialization in admiralty, public international law, conflict of laws, international business transactions, and European legal institutions. With the view to serving those interests, every year since 1980, Tulane Law School has sponsored summer sessions in Greece. The sessions are held on the islands of Rhodos (May 27-June 14) and Spetses (June 17-July 5). A student may enroll in one session only or in both sessions, but preference will be given to students enrolling in both sessions. Classes are held at the University of Athens, located in central Athens a short distance from Syntagma Square and the National Parliament, where the famous skirted Evzones (Greek soldiers) guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The University is a pleasant walk from the ancient Acropolis and the lively outdoor cafes of the nineteenth century quarter known as the Plaka. The Aegean Sea and the ferry to the Greek Islands are a subway ride away. Classes are taught by Temple and University of Athens professors and other prominent Greek lawyers who have taught in the program for many years. The three courses offered provide an in-depth understanding of the Greek legal system, which is a civil law system, and the functioning of the European Community, of which Greece is a member. Classroom lectures are reinforced with visits to Parliament, the criminal courts and other places of interest. Students can take up to six semester hours or nine quarter hours. TULANE UNIVERSITY Now in the fourth year of its operation, the Tulane Center for European Union Law is the first summer program to be offered by a US law school in Amsterdam, and the only one to be focused exclusively upon the law of the European Union and of its principal component, the European Community. Seven courses will be offered in 1996, four in the first (3-week) session and three in the second (2-week) session. Two of the courses will deal with the structure, institutions, and processes of the Union and with the principal problems it is likely to confront for the rest of this century; the remaining five courses will cover the substantive law of the Community and the Union, primarily from the standpoint of American enterprises engaging in transactions there. The courses will be taught by faculty drawn from universities and major law firms in Europe and the United States, and from Community institutions in Brussels, all of whom are widely recognized as the leading experts in their respective fields. The first session will include a required trip to Brussels and Luxembourg, to visit and observe the operation of the Community institutions and of the European Court of Justice. A student who successfully completes three courses in each session will become thoroughly familiar with the most important parts of European Union law and will be awarded a Certificate in recognition of this fact.
